FL- MARSHALL WEBER WORKSHOP AND LECTURE at Jaffe Center for Book Arts at Florida Atlantic University's Wimberly Library. Two programs featuring Marshall Weber of the Booklyn Artists' Alliance on March 27. Holistic Book Design workshop reveals the holistic design aspects of a book as an object that is heard, read, seen, smelled, touched, and operated. Participants handle books in order to feel the visceral nature of book design and function. Weber will then give a gallery talk, The Artists' Book in the 21st Century, discussing general trends in the field, such as the maturing of digital printing, and showing a selection of artists' books that exemplify recent creative developments in bookmaking. Karen Hanmer: Déjà Vu: History, Memory, Place features intimate, playful books fragment and layer text and image to intertwine memory, cultural history, and the history of science. The Naked Book: Expose Yourself to Journaling was curated by Linda Kiley to honor the technical beauty of book construction with an exhibition of blank, handmade books suitable for use as journals, sketchbooks or other creative gestures. CALL FOR ENTRIES: Prints: Now In 3D! Minnesota Center for Book Arts (MCBA) seeks art to be included in an exhibition of three-dimensional print. The exhibition will be presented in MCBA’s main gallery and will be an official exhibition held in conjunction with the Mid American Print Council’s Fall 2010 conference in Minneapolis. The exhibition will open July 9 and closes October 31. Featured work may include (but is not limited to): sculptures, artists’ books, suspended work, dimensional wall pieces, clothing, games, boxed multiples, installations, interactive work, and other formats that incorporate any manner of print making. The exhibition will be curated by Jeff Rathermel, MCBA’s Artistic Director, with the assistance of Sara Parr, Artistic Programs Support Coordinator at MCBA. CORCORAN COLLEGE OF ART + DESIGN announces a new program: Master of Arts in Art and the Book. The program offers a comprehensive approach to studying the history and theory of book culture, as well as contemporary methods of production. The program draws on the culturally rich collections and visiting artists at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, as well as resources at the Library of Congress, the National Gallery of Art, and other regional institutions. The two-year, 48-credit program offers an array of academic and studio courses from traditional book arts to digital and multimedia approaches, including Letterpress Printing, Binding, Paper Making, Typography, Graphic Design, Digital Media, Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Writing, and Photography. It also includes an internship program that pairs students with artists and curators at noted Washington establishments, giving students the opportunity for professional development in specialized areas. Graduates of the program will be accomplished scholars and bookmakers ready to practice their skills in academic, professional, and studio environments. MN- READER'S ART 10 opens at Susan Hensel Gallery, Minneapolis. This year it was curated by Jon Coffelt, who has brought in 51 artists and 100 books and book related objects from all over the world. The opening festivities are Friday, March 12, 7-9pm. A follow-up event is a poetry reading by book artist, poet, teacher Geargia A. Greely and members of the Laurel Poetry Collective , April 16, at 7pm. EU- BOOK HISTORY WORKSHOP in Lyon, France, August 31-September 3. For the eighth edition of its Book History Workshop, organised in collaboration with the Rare Book School (University of Virginia), the Lyon-based Institut d'histoire du livre is offering four advanced courses in the fields of book and printing history.
