Developed as early as the fourth century, this Ethiopian binding style has withstood the test of time. The elegant sewing structure, combined with the use of traditional wooden covers and alternative mica pages, opens a wide range of possibilities for both the beginner and the advanced bookbinder. ARTBOUND: First Annual Juried Student Book Arts Competition at the University of Florida Libraries invites entries: Students (graduate or undergraduate) making books in book arts and/or fine arts programs across the United States are invited to participate in ARTBOUND by submitting work to a juried artists' book exhibition and permanent collection at The University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries! Books selected by the jurors will be purchased for the qualifying award amount, exhibited during the ARTBOUND exhibition, and permanently added to the University of Florida Smathers Libraries' Special Collections in Book Arts. PAPER & BOOK INTENSIVE 2010: The online brochure for Paper & Book Intensive 2010 has been mounted at: www.paperbookintensive.org. EU- FABRIANO PAPER/PRINT/BOOK INTENSIVE 2010 takes place June 14-29. Pyramid Atlantic Art Center is again sponsoring “Paper, Print and Book” led by artist Lynn Sures in conjunction with Giorgio Pellegrini of the Museum of Paper and Watermark, Fabriano, Italy. The course will offer students two weeks of intensive study at the Museum with time to enjoy the beautiful Marche region. Traditional Italian book arts topics covered will be papermaking, watermark-making, intaglio printmaking, and binding. CA- ILIAZD-ISMS: HAND-SETTING AVANT-GARDE TYPOGRAPHY is a workshop with Johanna Drucker and Kitty Maryatt taking place February 6 at Scripps College Press. Iliazd made use of a number of techniques in the production of his experimental typographic books. These include the use of ornaments and rule to produce letterforms, mixed font typography, and complex compositions requiring elaborate justification. The workshop will provide a hands-on opportunity to appreciate the technical feats involved in his typesetting and design through an exercise in copying one or more of his designs. CA- JOHANNA DRUCKER PRESENTS Iliazd and the Modern Art of the Book on February 6, the Frederic W. Goudy Lecture at Scripps College, Claremont, CA. Ilia Zdanevich, aka Iliazd, began his artistic career in the vital world of the pre-Revolutionary Russian avant-garde in the 1910s.The typographically expressive works he made between 1917 and 1923 laid the foundation for his later productions in Paris, where he became one of the foremost producers of livres d’artistes under the imprint 41 Degrees. SAN DIEGO BOOK ARTS is hosting its third National Juried Exhibition May 29-July 18. Submission deadline is March 7 and is open to anyone residing in the United States. The opening reception is Saturday, May 29, 2010 from 2 - 4 PM at UC San Diego Geisel Library, Special Collections. MA, CT- ARTIST BOOK WORKSHOPS with Mary Taylor will be taking place this February at Taylor Art Studio in Marshfield, MA and this June at CCP of Norwalk, CT. Participants will create a drumleaf structured book plus a choice of making an origami book, ox plow or an accordion folded book.
