CALL FOR ENTRY: SPACE & SEQUENCE - Philadelphia Center for the Book is seeking member artists to participate in an exhibition of artist's books and prints entitled Space and Sequence at the Free Library of Philadelphia, 1901 Vine Street. Space and Sequence will take place September 14 through October 31, 2010, in an area adjacent to the main lobby of the Library. The exhibit will consist of two rows of 11 cases each, for a total of 22 cases to be filled with the book art and print work of PCB members. Guest juror, Jae Rossman, special collections librarian at the Arts Library of Yale University, will select the proposals from among those submitted, and each participating artist will be assigned one entire case to fill. FL- MARSHALL WEBER WORKSHOP AND LECTURE at Jaffe Center for Book Arts at Florida Atlantic University's Wimberly Library. Two programs featuring Marshall Weber of the Booklyn Artists' Alliance on March 27. Holistic Book Design workshop reveals the holistic design aspects of a book as an object that is heard, read, seen, smelled, touched, and operated. Participants handle books in order to feel the visceral nature of book design and function. Weber will then give a gallery talk, The Artists' Book in the 21st Century, discussing general trends in the field, such as the maturing of digital printing, and showing a selection of artists' books that exemplify recent creative developments in bookmaking. CALL FOR ENTRIES: Prints: Now In 3D! Minnesota Center for Book Arts (MCBA) seeks art to be included in an exhibition of three-dimensional print. The exhibition will be presented in MCBA’s main gallery and will be an official exhibition held in conjunction with the Mid American Print Council’s Fall 2010 conference in Minneapolis. The exhibition will open July 9 and closes October 31. Featured work may include (but is not limited to): sculptures, artists’ books, suspended work, dimensional wall pieces, clothing, games, boxed multiples, installations, interactive work, and other formats that incorporate any manner of print making. The exhibition will be curated by Jeff Rathermel, MCBA’s Artistic Director, with the assistance of Sara Parr, Artistic Programs Support Coordinator at MCBA. CORCORAN COLLEGE OF ART + DESIGN announces a new program: Master of Arts in Art and the Book. The program offers a comprehensive approach to studying the history and theory of book culture, as well as contemporary methods of production. The program draws on the culturally rich collections and visiting artists at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, as well as resources at the Library of Congress, the National Gallery of Art, and other regional institutions. The two-year, 48-credit program offers an array of academic and studio courses from traditional book arts to digital and multimedia approaches, including Letterpress Printing, Binding, Paper Making, Typography, Graphic Design, Digital Media, Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Writing, and Photography. It also includes an internship program that pairs students with artists and curators at noted Washington establishments, giving students the opportunity for professional development in specialized areas. CA- ILIAZD-ISMS: HAND-SETTING AVANT-GARDE TYPOGRAPHY is a workshop with Johanna Drucker and Kitty Maryatt taking place February 6 at Scripps College Press. Iliazd made use of a number of techniques in the production of his experimental typographic books. These include the use of ornaments and rule to produce letterforms, mixed font typography, and complex compositions requiring elaborate justification. The workshop will provide a hands-on opportunity to appreciate the technical feats involved in his typesetting and design through an exercise in copying one or more of his designs. CA- JOHANNA DRUCKER PRESENTS Iliazd and the Modern Art of the Book on February 6, the Frederic W. Goudy Lecture at Scripps College, Claremont, CA. Ilia Zdanevich, aka Iliazd, began his artistic career in the vital world of the pre-Revolutionary Russian avant-garde in the 1910s.The typographically expressive works he made between 1917 and 1923 laid the foundation for his later productions in Paris, where he became one of the foremost producers of livres d’artistes under the imprint 41 Degrees. OR- THE ASSIGNMENT opens Dec 3 at 23 Sandy Gallery in Portland. This national, juried book arts exhibition is being held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the CBAA in Portland, Oregon. To illuminate the meeting's focus on book arts teaching practice and pedagogy, this exhibition features artist book works that were generated directly from course assignments or from self-assignments generated by the artist. The Assignment was juried by Macy Chadwick and Clifton Meador. The College Book Art Association (www.collegebookart.org) is a non-profit organization fundamentally committed to the teaching of book arts at the college and
